One Giant Leap, For Dentistry

In recent years, modern dental technology has grown by leaps and bounds, and improved in ways never imagined.

With numerous new ways to:

  • Repair and replace missing or damaged teeth
  • Check for oral diseases
  • Restore a smile by whitening the patient’s teeth

Keeping up with the consistent influx of new technology and cosmetic dentistry options can certainly be a challenge for today’s dentists.

Although still relatively new, (having only hit the market a few years ago) a groundbreaking new technology for whitening teeth has quickly become one of the most sought-after treatments within the dental profession today. Known as the Guided Light Optic (or GloPro) technology, this revolutionary whitening system is unlike any other to ever produced.

Glo Pro Teeth Whitening: A Triumph Of Cosmetic Dentistry

The Glo Pro teeth whitening kit consists of an illuminating mouthpiece, an attachable replacement control, charging dock, and g-vial refill accessory. To begin use of the Glo Pro technology, the patient must first fully charge the controller, then apply whitening gel to both the top and bottom rows of teeth. Once complete, you are ready to place the illuminated blue mouthpiece in your mouth for the required eight-minute duration. By repeating this three-step process daily, your results will be a smile that is at least 5 shades whiter than previously seen, thus making your smile brighter than ever!

Glo Pro Teeth Whitening vs. Basic Whitening Trays

Although the Glo Pro system is a revolutionary new whitening system that has taken the industry by storm, it is certainly not the first whitening system of all time. Basic over-the-counter whitening trays have been a staple of local pharmacies and convenience stories for many years and will likely continue to be so in the foreseeable future.

While moderately priced and readily available, basic whitening trays have been subject to a considerable amount of criticism by both dental practitioners and patrons for some inadvertent drawbacks and issues presented. Such known issues due to the use of basic whitening trays may include:

  • Blistering or irritated gums caused by seepage of the bleach solution
  • Increased tooth sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
  • Occasional throat irritation and tenderness

Fortunately, with the science behind the Glo Pro teeth whitening system such hazards are no longer present, and the vast improvement to one’s smile by far exceeds that of its predecessor.

Schedule Your Summer Dental Appointment

dental-appointment

Schools Out for the Summer!

Summer is here, and we know what that means! Long sunny days, warm summer nights, poolside lounging, bar-b-que dinners, and of course kids, kids, and more kids! Yes, the summertime is that time that all kids love, and while this season of warmth and nostalgia is a welcome time for most, it can also be a time to get caught up on things too!  With a well-deserved break in the hectic school schedule, much can be accomplished, and few are as important as scheduling a routine dental appointment for yourself or your kiddo.

Dental Appointment: The Six-Month Rule

Like any routine service, annual dental checkups are a mandatory requirement in maintaining proper dental hygiene and health. To achieve this, Dr. Kimes and other professional dentists generally believe in following what is known as the “six-month rule”.  This of course, calls for two appointments per year, with a six-month period between each dental appointment.  While this may seem a bit excessive to some, it is highly recommended that patients of all ages adhere to this rule as prevention is always the key to good oral health.

Dental Appointment: Benefits Of Summer Appointments

As certainly many parents can attest to, the school year can be very hectic at times, especially for parents who must balance this with a full-time work schedule. Therefore, the benefits of scheduling a summertime dental appointment are staggering to say the least.

  1. Prevention:

As mentioned earlier, preventative dental treatment is paramount to maintain long term oral health. This is particularly true with busy students during the school semester. Nothing can disrupt someone’s daily activities like a nagging toothache! By receiving the recommended summertime dental appointment, you might be sparing your kids from any future tooth problems or potential distractions.

  2. Less Scheduling Conflict:

Interruptions in your work schedule and your children’s school schedules are sometimes unavoidable; however, there’s certainly no reason for anymore inconvenience than necessary.

  3. Health Requirements:

While this is not always the case, certain school districts may require students to receive a standard oral exam prior to enrollment, or by a selected date within the fall semester. Although this is likely to vary somewhat depending on the specific school, its always better to play it safe and get the standard check ups out of the way before the semester starts.

Dental Appointment: Don’t Procrastinate!

With time to spare and schedules open, the time to make those mandatory appointments is now! Remember although summer appointments are always a great idea, with the busy fall semester on the horizon, remaining dental appointment spots won’t last for very long!

So save yourself and your kids the hassle, and make your family’s dental appointment today!

Dr. Charles R. Kimes, DDS and his expert team at Overland Park Dentistry look forward to having the opportunity to care for you and your family with any preventativerestorative or cosmetic needs you or your family may have. To schedule your dental appointment or consultation with your Overland Park Dentist, contact us at our south Overland Park office at (913) 647-8700 or our north Overland Park office at (913) 341-2380.

Porcelain Veneers: A hot new arrival this summer!

porcelain-veneers

As the humidity rises and summer of 2018 looms large on the horizon, clearly excitement is in the air. And while the weather might be hot, modern dentistry might be even hotter! Due in no small part to the recent advancements made in dental technology, professional dentistry is on fire right now and the heat only seems to keep on rising! With the continuous buzz and chatter surrounding the new changes in the industry, many questions have arisen regarding improvements that have made to well-known procedures that have come to define the dental field as we know it.

While this does include improvements to standard, commonly preformed practices such as crowns and fillings, whitening procedures, and even entire tooth replacements, perhaps one of the most frequent inquires is that of dental porcelain Veneers. Although initially introduced during the 1980s, dental porcelain veneers have slowly become one of the most sought after and universally praised methods of cosmetic dental restoration among both practitioners and patients alike! Therefore, to meet consumer’s growing demand, the dental industry has given the wildly popular porcelain veneers something of a 21st century upgrade, thus introducing the all new Lumineers!

Dr. Charles R. Kimes at Overland Park Dentistry has seen this treatment option become more and more popular over the years and can now offer his patients the choice of porcelain veneers or Lumineers to achieve the smile of their dreams.

Porcelain Veneers: “The Lumineers”

(No, not the band!)

Although certainly a cool band with some very catchy songs, the type of Lumineers that we are actually referring to can do some amazing things none the less! Like their predecessors, Lumineers are a clear, shell-like device created with the purpose of being worn directly over your upper and lower rows of teeth. This allows the device to act as a something of a rain jacket, helping protect your teeth from hazardous elements, as well as concealing any prior received abrasions or blemishes that your teeth may have. This ability to create a seemingly flawless smile, is undoubtedly what made porcelain veneers such a sought-after commodity in the past, and what continues to make the new Lumineers the highly coveted item they are today.

However, the advantages of dental Lumineers don’t end there. While similar, Lumineers have a number of different aspects and features that provide the user with an easier, safer, and much more pleasant experience!

Porcelain Veneers: Lumineers vs. Veneers – Similarities & Differences

While highly similar to dental porcelain veneers, the newly created Lumineers have a striking number of differences from their predecessors that convey their superiority as a product. Ultimately this proves themselves as a worthy successor to the still highly esteemed porcelain veneers.

Similarities:

As corresponding devices with a mutual purpose, Lumineers and porcelain veneers inevitably have much in common in terms of concept and general functionality. Both products are designed to improve the overall appearance of the user’s smile, by shrouding it in a whiter but seemingly natural color tint, while simultaneously concealing any damage or misalignment as achieved through their thin, but durable porcelain material.

Differences:

Despite the obvious similarities, the advantages that Lumineers have over porcelain veneers are unmistakable and can have a significant impact on your teeth. Though efficient, the process of receiving dental veneers can be less then desirable, and if mismanaged or neglected can create problems later on. This is due to the reshaping process, in which some of the surface of your tooth is filed down or removed along with the tooth’s enamel. While this is necessary to prevent excess clutter and maintain the veneer’s natural appearance, should the veneers be removed, the lack of natural enamel will leave the teeth unprotected and vulnerable to outside agents.

For many years, the removal of the tooth’s enamel was considered by experts to be the only major downside of veneers; however, with Lumineers this is no longer an issue!

Due to the much thinner nature of porcelain Lumineers, (generally around the same consistency as a contact lens) removing your tooth’s enamel or reshaping them is no longer required! By eliminating the invasive reshaping process, Lumineers not only provide a quicker, easier solution, but also succeed in preventing any issues in the long run.

Porcelain Veneers: The next big thing!

Although porcelain veneers remain a fan favorite within the realm of cosmetic dentistry, the up and coming porcelain Lumineers are sure to quickly surpass them! By effectively avoiding the short-comings of dental veneers, yet continuing to help patients achieve a beautiful, picture-perfect smile, porcelain Lumineers are sure to make a big splash for this summer, and many more to come!

Kimes, DDS and his expert team at Overland Park Dentistry look forward to having the opportunity to care for you and your family with any preventativerestorative or cosmetic needs you or your family may have. CEREC Crown: Technology giving you a crown in One Day!

cerec-crown

The Future is Now with the CEREC Crown

Although it’s been said many times before, but in this age of iPhones, YouTube, social media, drones, and of course selfies galore, it appears 2018 is the American future we once dreamed of! With the countless new advancements in technology that we have seen in recent years, and continuous new discoveries and innovations on the horizon, the sky’s the limit for what’s yet to come!  While numerous businesses and professional fields have been significantly impacted by this influx of new technology, few have experienced as much change and improvement as the field of professional dentistry. This may come as a surprise to many, given the dental industry age and rather monotonous reputation, however in the 21st century we have learned that it’s never too late for an old dog to learn some new tricks! Thanks to the increasing advancements in technology and improvements and new alternatives to many of the standard procedures, the dental industry as a whole has received a major 21st century upgrade, thus enabling dentists across the country to provide their patients with a quality of care not previously thought possible!

Before the CEREC CROWN | Dental Crowns: A Brief History

As a basic but effective tool in the arsenal of dentists for many years, the standard dental crown, has become one of the most well known and commonly preformed procedures within the profession. As you might already know, the conventional dental crown is a method of repairing and ultimately restoring teeth that sustained damage or simply decayed over a period of time. This is achieved through the use of a crown or tooth-shaped cap that is placed over the top of the tooth, thereby covering and concealing the damaged area. This not only prevents any further damage, but effectively replaces the damaged portion of the tooth, thus restoring it to its former self.

Once fully restored, the newly crowned tooth will provide both a durable and aesthetically pleasing solution. While the final product is truly remarkable, the process of receiving a crown is not always the most desirable experience and has caused something of a headache among patients in the past. When receiving a standard dental crown, the process requires at least two separate appointments, in which the patient would likely have to take time off work or adjust their schedules to accommodate. Additionally, in waiting to receive a conventional crown, the patient would be given a temporary crown to wear between appointments. While certainly necessary in preventing future damage and providing a quick fix, the cumbersome temporary crown has been unpopular with patients in the past. Temporary crowns have been known to break easily, or sometimes to even fall out. Tedious as the process may be, the end result will typically be that of a sturdy and dependable crown to serve as a long-term replacement.

Although the standard crown will certainly prove its worth over time, it’s important to remember that the average lifespan of a regular dental crown is approximately ten years. However this may certainly vary depending on both lifestyle habits and the routine practice of proper oral hygiene by the patient. That said, the conventional crown despite its flaws, is a tried and true solution that has helped patients for many years.

The Cerec Crown: A New Era

Okay here’s what you’ve all been waiting for! Now imagine a new type of crown that is ecstatically flawless and permanent unlike the standard crown. Image if this crown could be both made and fitted in your mouth in just one single appointment!

Sounds like an imaginary scenario that’s just too good to be true doesn’t it?

Well imagine no more, because this mythical and seemingly flawless new crown is no myth! As the “Chair-side Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics” or “CEREC Crown” is both a very real and highly regarded new procedure that in a short time has received critical acclaim among dentists and patients alike.

As a concept originally conceived by the dental industry during the 1980s, the CEREC crown concept was shelved due to a lack of technology at the time and for years remained little more than a far-fetched proposal for the future. While few expected the CEREC concept to ever come to fruition, as the 21st century saw technology soaring to never before seen heights, the once elusive CEREC crown was now a possibility!

Where Can I Get a CEREC Crown?

Newly available at Overland Park Dentistry, the CEREC crown is a specially customized dental crown. This cutting edge digital imagining allows Dr. Kimes to scan the inside of your mouth to accurately pinpoint the precise dimensions of your new crown; and thereby create a near perfect replica of your natural tooth! Once placed over a rotten or broken natural tooth, this masterpiece of modern dentistry provides a permanent replacement. Your CEREC crown is virtually unnoticeable and can even be customized to match the exact shade of your teeth!

Although considerably stronger, presenting an exponentially improved appearance, many patients consider the convenient process in receiving the CEREC crown to be among their favorite improvements over the conventional crown.

As mentioned previously… unlike the conventional crown, the CEREC crown only requires one appointment to receive, giving you a complete, permanent replacement, and sparing you the hassle of making it to multiple appointments and having to manage a temporary crown.

Invisalign Dentist: Technology is Beautiful

The Future Is Now!

As we plunge further in to into what some may refer to as “The Industrial Revolution of the 21st Century” we find ourselves continuously engrossed in a quagmire of ever-advancing technology. While some may argue that this recent wave of advancement comes at a price, (overuse, dependence and even addiction to various mobile devices) it certainly has its share of benefits as well! Although frequently overshadowed by an expanding array of sleek, cutting edge tablets, iPhones, and other entertainment devices, perhaps the greatest and most significant impact of our recent advancements in technology are the improvements within the medical field.

Dentistry is certainly no exception to this, as improvements within dental technology have essentially revolutionized the dental field, thus allowing the dentists of today to provide their patients with a level of excellence that previously was not thought to be possible. With dynamic new services available within the realms of preventative, restorative and cosmetic dentistry, the dental industry as a whole has experienced a recent resurgence in both popularity and patient satisfaction.

Invisalign Dentist: Cosmetic Dentistry at Its Finest!

While the recent rise in the dental profession is due to the introduction of numerous new forms of treatment, arguably the most popular and sought-after treatment is the new Invisalign technology. It is recommended that you work with an Invisalign Dentist who is certified with this technology. With a name that is quickly becoming synonymous with that of cosmetic dentistry, the Invisalign aligners are transparent, custom fitted, removable dental aligners that realign and straighten your teeth with very little hassle. An Invisalign Dentist will design them and they are to be worn daily over your teeth, the soft but flexible aligners can be easily removed while eating or brushing your teeth, thereby providing quick access and preventing any limitations.

Another praiseworthy aspect is the quick and effective results produced by Invisalign, typically realigning and correcting one’s teeth at a range of 6 to 18 months. This can be attributed to the frequency in which the aligners are to be replaced, as the aligners are to be discarded and replaced with a new one every two weeks, thus constantly adjusting the teeth to a more desirable alignment.

A third and particularly comforting feature of the Invisalign technology is the generally pain-free and stress-free experience by the patient when using them. Due to their noninvasive nature, Invisalign aligners cause little to no discomfort when in use by a patient, (some of which even admit to forgetting they were on!) And additionally, they are often unnoticeable, thereby preventing any anxiety or embarrassment, as sometimes experienced by patients previously.

Invisalign Dentist: A Bright Smile and a Bright Future Await!

As advanced as modern dental technology is today, chances are that it will only continue to be further build upon and improved, and the Invisalign technology is certainly no exception to this! With continuing advancements in technology, the Invisalign treatment will likely only get better in time, thus providing endless future possibilities!

So, if you are unhappy with you current smile or wish your teeth were straighter, come see Dr. Kimes, the Invisalign Dentist, and his friendly staff here at Overland Park Dentistry, and see what today’s dental technology can do for you!

Oral Cancer Screening: Prevention Saves Lives

oral-cancer-screeningOral Cancer Screening: The Season of Life

Its that time once again! That time of year where the cold bitterness of winter begins to taper off and the warm rays of sunlight slowly begin to take its place. It is during this time of transition in which we witness what’s sometimes referred to as the “Spring Phoenix” as rising from the ashes of the harsh dismal winter, green sprouts of life began to appear. As flowers begin to emerge and bloom, clearly it’s a beautiful time to not only be alive, but to truly feel alive! Therefore, perhaps it is only fitting that in this season of celebrating life, that we take the time to reflect on one of the most fundamental issues of our lives; our health. In keeping up with the hustle and bustle of daily life (work, family, finances, etc) its easy to sometimes take one’s health for granted. However, with the innumerable health hazards that one may encounter in life, it’s always in one’s best interest to maintain a keen level of awareness of any serious illnesses.

As you probably know, cancer in all its forms is one of the most serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses affecting the world population today. However, what you might not know is that there are but few types of cancer deadlier than that of oral cancer!  Therefore, in response, April has been officially named “Oral Cancer Awareness Month” among the dental community. While this may be the first you’ve heard of it, it won’t be the last and you can rest assured it is certainly a cause worth knowing about!

Oral Cancer Screening: A Storm on the Horizon

Oral cancer is an extremely aggressive type of cancer that can manifest within the throat, cheeks, lips, or tongue, and may continue to spread throughout the body.  With an annual death toll of approximately 7,500 deaths occurring within the U.S. alone, oral cancer is clearly not an issue to be taken lightly.

However, despite the imminent danger presented by oral cancer, like an unexpected storm looming in the distance, oral cancer often sneaks up on a person with little warning. Until its too late that is! This is generally because the initial symptoms of oral cancer often seem relatively mild and seem little more than a minor nuisance. Such early symptoms may include: a slight hoarseness or gravelly tone to your voice, and perhaps the appearance of ulcers or swelling around the mouth and neck region. While such minor nuisances may not exactly seem as a serious cause for alarm, they can in fact be more than they appear. As mentioned previously, deception is a key factor in oral cancer’s modus operandi.

When a patient first begins developing oral cancer, the symptoms are typically minor and thereby left unchecked or dismissed. However, the patient may actually be in the early stages of developing oral cancer, without being aware of it! Unfortunately (like so many before them) the patient, unaware of their affliction does not seek treatment right away, thus allowing the cancer to continue to progress. It may only be when the persistent symptoms start to worsen, that the patient finally seeks out the necessary medical care. Tragically this required treatment may only come when the disease has already progressed into its latter stages, in which the cancer has proceeded to ravage the patient’s overall health, causing irreversible and often fatal damage.

This scenario, (grim as it may sound) is an important one to hear and learn from, as it illustrates the trap that many oral cancer patients have fallen victim to in the past. However, with the advent of oral cancer awareness month, and the continued advancements in dental technology, the time to rise and fight back against oral cancer has never been better!

Oral Cancer Screenings: Risk Factors

The common oral cancer screening may in fact be the dental profession’s best kept secret, as the majority of patients are unaware that they are receiving the screening even as it happens!

An oral cancer screening is a quick and painless procedure that Dr. Kimes preforms as part of your standard dental exam at Overland Park Dentistry. When you come in for your routine dental checkup, you are simultaneously receiving an accurate screening for any early signs or symptoms of oral cancer, which is something that can be a deciding factor. Identifying and treating oral cancer within its earliest stages is often the best bet in fully overcoming the disease, as the cancer is not given the time to cause damage and spread, therefore it is paramount that you let Dr. Kimes take the time to give you that crucial oral cancer screening during your next dental appointment!

Oral Cancer Screening: Help Us Help You!

While Dr. Kimes will undoubtedly be a powerful ally in the battle against oral cancer, to truly receive the best results possible, you must be willing to make some changes in yourself.

It should presumably come at little surprise that a person’s lifestyle often plays a significant role in the development and recovery process of oral cancer. While typically occurring in individuals 40 years and older, the development of oral cancer is often directly linked to heavy alcohol and tobacco consumption, as regular users of such products have an almost ten times greater chance in developing the disease, and those that continue to use them will have limited chance of recovery.

While much of the information provided above may not exactly present the bright and cheerful message that you may be accustomed to this time of year, please remember that the purpose of this article is to remind you that there’s still time to change this! Therefore, if you do have any concerns or anxiety over your chances of developing oral cancer, taking the time to schedule a routine dental checkup and oral cancer screening, is unquestionably the right decision.

Although far too many people have been dealt the cruel hand of oral cancer in the past, and have tragically had to face the consequences, YOU have the power to change this for yourself!

Please don’t become another statistic, let’s take a stand against oral cancer together!

Root Canal Symptoms: The Root of Your Fears

root-canal-symptoms

Root Canal Symptoms: What is at the root of your fears?

Are you having root canal symptoms? You don’t have to be an insider within the dental profession to be familiar with the term “Root Canal”, as the mere mention of the term has left many dental patients shaking in their shoes. Perhaps due to its association with pain, or perhaps simply due to its serious sounding name, root canals have seem to have become the dental community’s version of the boogeyman!  As result of this, root canals have received something of a bad reputation among patients, and while the thought of getting a root canal may sound a bit scary for some, few people truly take the time to ask what exactly a root canal is?

Well for starters, the term root canal doesn’t refer to a dental procedure, but rather to the pulp-based chambers and canals within and around the tooth. Much like trees and plants, these chambers and canals serve as the inner source of nourishment or (to put it bluntly) the guts and roots of the tooth.

The procedure often mistakenly known as a “root canal” is correctly known as endodontic therapy. And rather than the boogeyman, this procedure is actually something of an angel in disguise. “Endo” being the Greek word for inside, and “Odont” being Greek for tooth, is (as its name implies) the maintenance and restoration of the inner anatomy of your tooth; which as you will see here is often not what its perceived to be.

A Chamber of Horrors: Root Canal Symptoms

Obviously, the chamber and canals within your tooth are of vital importance to the overall health of your tooth; however, if decay, damage or an infection were to contaminate this connective tissue, this otherwise healthy pulp chamber can quickly regress into a chamber of horrors and require treatment! Whether it be decay from improper dental hygiene or simply damage from a chipped or cracked tooth, if the pulp becomes infected, you’re going to notice.

Root Canal Symptoms of an infected root canal may include:

  • Sharp pain and prolonged tenderness
  • Extreme sensitivity to hot or cold foods
  • Swelling of nearby gums
  • Pain and/or difficulty when chewing or applying pressure
  • Noticeable darkening or discoloration of the tooth

While the symptoms of the infected pulp and root may vary at first, chances are likely they will greatly worsen over time. Living with such persistent pain may become increasingly difficult or even unbearable. Therefore, to remedy this pain and prevent any further complications, endodontic treatment is essential.

Root Canal Symptoms: Endodontic Treatment

The process of replacing and restoring the root canal has been one of the more sophisticated and important procedures available in modern dentistry for many years now. As mentioned previously, this procedure has garnered something of a negative perception over the years. However, as illustrated by the above-mentioned symptoms, truthfully the entire purpose of endodontic treatment is to restore the tooth and relieve any discomfort you may be experiencing.

The endodontic treatment process itself is pretty straight-forward and can easily be broken down into five phases:

  1. The initial (and often most stress relieving) phase of the treatment is to prepare the tooth. This includes numbing the tooth and affected area, then creating a small opening through the tooth’s crown into the pulp chamber.
  2. The second and perhaps most important phase is the removal of the pulp or nerve tissue of the tooth. In this phase the pulp is entirely removed from within the tooth and the pulp chamber along with all root canals are cleaned and reshaped. The purpose of this is to remove all infected tissue from the tooth, then prepare it to be refilled.
  3. Much like the second phase, the third phase focuses on the continued expulsion of the infection from within chambers and canals. A sterilizing material is placed within them to rid the tooth of any remaining bacteria. Once complete, the tooth is then sealed with a temporary filling, to prevent contamination.
  4. The fourth phase of the endodontic treatment is a bit of a transitional phase and in some cases, may likely require two separate appointments to fully complete. Upon return, your dentist will remove the temporary filling and re-examine the tooth to ensure the infection has been totally eradicated. In advanced cases antibiotics may be required prevent the infection from spreading.
  5. The final phase is when the dentist ultimately restores the tooth by administering a dental crown or a filling. This step strengthens the tooth, and returns it to its former healthy appearance. While this completes the endodontic treatment process, it’s important to continue scheduling yearly routine dental appointments and practicing proper oral hygiene at home, as failure to do so may lead to additional complications!

Root Canal Symptoms: Nothing to fear but fear itself!

As you can hopefully assume, in spite of the hype and less than stellar reputation, the highly misunderstood endodontic treatment, (or root canal as it’s so often called) is truly nothing scary at all. Yes, like the Loch Ness Monster, the Abominable Snowman and the Boogeyman, this so-called monster is nothing more than myth and at Overland Park Dentistry we are more than happy to prove this to you!

Is having endodontic therapy the most desirable situation to be in? Of course not! But is it the awful, miserable, nightmarish experience that some would lead you to believe? Not at all! So, if a painful root canal is making your life a nightmare, have no fear! Come see us at Overland Park Dentistry so we can treat your root canal symptoms!

In the Overland Park area, there are many family dentistry practices to choose from, so why not get some advice? Try talking to who you know, this can include; family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, or even doctors and pharmacists. By asking for recommendations, or doing some research online, you will start to get a clearer idea as to what dentists are out there, and how people feel about them.

  • Specific Needs in Family Dentistry:

Although this might seem obvious, it is extremely important to ask yourself, what exactly are you looking for in a family dentistry practice, and what specific things do you and your family require? If you’re searching for an expedited dental service that can simply provide the necessary amount of treatment, then perhaps a large dental clinic may be the right choice. However, if you have young children or have any fears or anxieties about going to the dentist, then you should probably consider a privately-owned practice. Although a bit slower, private practices generally provide a calmer much more family friendly environment that may be preferable for children and patients who have dental anxiety.

  • Insurance and Family Dentistry:

Dental insurance can be a tricky subject, and you certainly don’t want any unnecessary complications! Try finding a dentist within your network, or that may be compatible with your insurance provider. Taking the time to truly understand your health insurance benefits prior to selecting a dentist would be a good idea!

  • Family Dentistry: Proximity and Convenience

While you don’t necessarily have to find a dentist within the Overland Park area, it would certainly be a good idea to do so, as there are many great practitioners in the area! Also keep in mind the commute; do you really want to drive 45 minuets for a dental appointment?

  • Family Dentistry Qualifications:

Remember, your dentist is there to help you, so here’s your chance to play boss! Think of it as something of an application process. Questions such as:

    • Where did this dentist go to school?
    • What types of dentistry are they qualified to do?
    • How long have they been practicing professional dentistry?

All of these questions are fair game in the selection process.

  • Family Dentistry: Face to face

Finding a dentist with whom you and your family feel comfortable with is key to building a relationship and rapport with them, so meeting with them personally is necessary. Much like the previous step, think of it as something of a job interview, is this family dentistry practice right for the job? Only you can decide!

  • Family Dentistry: Office and Atmosphere

Sure, it may sound a little silly, but as alluded to earlier, the actual office and overall atmosphere of a family dentistry practice can really make a difference. This is particularly true amongst families with young children, as a cheerful and kid-friendly environment can play a major role in how children come to view going to the dentist.

Diabetes and Oral Health: The Link between Diabetes and Gum Disease

Diabetes and Oral Health: Diabetes by the Numbers

You may be wondering if diabetes and oral health are actually linked. We wanted to dive into that topic today…

As you are probably aware, diabetes is one of the most common and widespread diseases, affecting approximately 9.3 of the U.S. population today. Diabetes in the most basic sense is a disorder in which the person’s body is no longer able to properly react or produce the hormone known as insulin. This results in a heightened level of glucose (sugar) within the bloodstream, which if left untreated can bring about multitude of health problems or complications, some of which may be potentially fatal. Therefore, to correctly treat and manage diabetes, a diabetic must be willing to make the necessary lifestyle changes to do so.

Such changes may include:

  • Adhering to a specific diet and exercise regimen
  • Routinely monitoring one’s blood glucose levels
  • Giving up certain habits or preferences that may negatively affect the condition

Although a diabetic must face a number of obstacles in maintaining their health, one hazard that mustn’t ever be overlooked, is oral health. Oral health of course, refers the mouth and everything in it. In the case of a diabetic, if oral health is neglected or improperly cared for, the results can be catastrophic, as periodontal disease will likely interact with and thereby worsen diabetes.

Oral Health And Periodontal Disease

Oral health has historically been long overlooked by the medical field and was often dismissed as more of a nuisance rather than a legitimate medical concern. However, in recent years this perception has changed dramatically, as further research continues to discover irrefutable evidence linking oral health and various other illnesses and conditions, one of which would undeniably be diabetes.

To put it simply, if one fails to adequately care for their oral health, they run the risk of developing the condition known as periodontal disease, or otherwise known as perio or gum disease. Although gum disease is a progressive and sometimes slowly occurring disease, in the case of diabetics however, the effects of gum disease are quicker and much fiercer.

The harsh truth is that diabetics have a much higher probability of developing gum disease. If a diabetic develops gum disease, it is imperative that they receive proper care for and closely monitor both illnesses, as neglecting one will likely exacerbate the other!

For instance; if you suffer from diabetes, but fail to properly maintain your blood glucose levels, you will have elevated levels of glucose (or sugar) circulating throughout different areas in your body, especially within your mouth. In response to the heightened glucose, your mouth begins accumulating excess bacteria, which ultimately creates the ideal setting for an infection like periodontal disease to develop and flourish.

Conversely, periodontitis is a progressive bacterial infection within the gum tissue that if neglected, can severely damage or destroy your gums, teeth, and jaw. However, like any infection, gum disease may profoundly affect and destabilize you’re the blood glucose level, therefore making them increasingly difficult to control and ultimately allowing the diabetes to exponentially progress.

Diabetes and Oral Health: What to Watch For!

While the symptoms of diabetes are certainly notable, as it affects nearly all aspects of your health, if left unchecked and it may likely begin interacting with affecting your oral health almost immediately. Therefore, some of the telltale signs of this internal interaction are:

  • Sore or swollen gums
  • Bleeding gums
  • Eroding gum line
  • Thrush or fungal infections
  • Prolonged or slow-healing sores or wounds
  • Teeth that may feel loose or sensitive
  • Dry mouth or burning sensation
  • Difficulty tasting certain foods
  • Jaw or facial pain
  • Persistent foul breath
  • Increased susceptibility to additional oral infections or complications

Oh, Thank Heaven! Seven Prevention Tips:

If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, or know someone is, there are many tips and tricks that can be utilized to help prevent periodontal disease or reduce the likelihood of any further damage from occurring.

  1. Always remember to brush and floss:

While this may seem rather obvious, it’s important to remember that consistency is without doubt, one of the key aspects in successful maintenance of any sort, and your teeth are certainly no exception! Therefore, taking time to both brush and floss everyday is a mandatory first step when managing diabetes and oral health. Remember that sometimes its simplest things that matter most!

  1. Keep your blood glucose levels in your target range:

It’s absolutely critical that when managing diabetes and oral health you keep constant track of your A1C level, or the amount of glucose that enters your bloodstream. An A1C level of below 7 percent is generally what’s recommended; however, for specifics, you’ll need to contact your doctor.

  1. Use proper technique:

Again, this may seem obvious, but it’s very important to stress how proper technique can play a major factor when managing diabetes and oral health. Because brushing is such a routine habit, many people brush their teeth without even giving it a second thought. Yes, it IS an easy habit to get into, but by taking a few extra minuets daily to thoroughly brush not only your teeth, but your tongue as well, and then to floss afterwards can really make a big difference! Also remember brushing at least three times a day will give you the best results, when it comes to brushing three is the magic number.

  1. Make use of tools:

Fluoride rinse, dental picks, anti-plaque mouthwash, and of course dental floss, are all effective weapons that can be used to ward off gum disease and keep your mouth healthy when managing diabetes and oral health! If you feel that any such tools might be of help to you, consult your dentist for professional opinion.

  1. Schedule routine dental appointments:

To properly maintain both oral and general health, it’s imperative that you schedule routine checkups with your dentist. Generally, most dentists recommend that you make at least two appointments per year; however, as mentioned earlier diabetics are always at an increased risk of developing periodontal disease, and therefore additional appointments might be necessary. Remember Dr. Charles R. Kimes and his expert team at Overland Park Dentistry is your best friend when it comes to managing your diabetes and oral health, so be sure to tell them that you have diabetes, and let them know of any changers or concerns.

Whether signing up for a gym membership, or just taking the time once a day to walk or jog, finding a way to stay active is the key to not only healthier life, bur a happier one too!

  1. Don’t Smoke:

It’s no secret by now that smoking is bad for you. Smoking can certainly put you at risk for gum disease and additional complications with diabetes. If you are unable to quit and need help, contact your doctor for assistance.

A friendly February reminder!

As we enter the unpredictable month of February, and eagerly await the groundhog’s prediction, certainly there is much to do! However, this uncertain and often busy month, as of 1949, received another significant meaning. In the years since this significance has become continuously more predominant and widespread. On February 8th, 1949, the day was designated as “Children’s Dental Health Day” by the American Dental Association.

Since then, this small yearly event has expanded from a one-day/week-long event held in both Cleveland, Ohio and Akron, Ohio respectively, to a month-long nationwide program. Later it was officially being dubbed as National Children’s Dental Health Month (NCDHM). This annual health observance brings together hundreds of thousands of dental practitioners, health professionals and providers, and oral health experts and enthusiasts, all for the common goal of promoting and educating children and parents alike on importance of practicing proper oral hygiene.

Therefore, in the spirit of this continuously growing month of awareness focused on children’s dental health, we have compiled a list of some useful ideas and tips. We hope they will help you take on the mission of finding the best way to teach your child how to brush and floss properly to care for their teeth. Dr. Charles R. Kimes and his expert team at Overland Park Dentistry offer dental health services for patients of all ages. We believe that the foundation of all learning starts at home; and dental health is no different.

While teaching a young child the right way to care for their teeth may seem like a daunting task, sometimes a little imagination and a few simple changes can make all the difference and change a chore to a new habit!

Dental Health Services: Kids and Healthy Teeth

When it comes to children’s oral health, it’s certainly always a good idea to nurture the habit of practicing proper oral care from an early age. This helps cement the importance of oral hygiene and having healthy teeth. However, when it comes to teaching children why it’s necessary and the process to correctly care for their teeth; things can get tricky fast! As you know, teaching kids is not an exact science; they’re all different with their own interests in learning new things. Even though there are countless theories and beliefs on this concept, finding the right approach for your child can be a difficult chore. However, according to many primary school administrators, young children are often creatures habit, and learn most effectively when taught in repetition or a type of pattern. Obviously, this may require a bit of creativity and some patience, but taking the time to teach your child the basics of oral hygiene is truly a fun and rewarding endeavor!

Dental Health Services: Five tips to a healthy smile

  1. Keep it Simple:

It’s important to start with the basics when we work with children. This consists of showing your kiddo how to thoroughly brush their teeth, including all the hard to reach places! Don’t forget to teach them how long to brush (2 minutes, twice each day) and how much toothpaste is needed. Flossing is important too, so remember once they’ve got brushing down, flossing is the second best step. Check out this quick video from the ADA:  “No More Nasties: Brushing for Kids”

  2. Have Fun:

Here’s your chance to embrace your inner child. Even though brushing may not always be the most exciting activity, it doesn’t have to be boring either! So, make a game out of it! How about making it into a contest to see who can have the cleanest teeth or the whitest smile or sing their favorite song while brushing? Lead with a little creativity and throw in some enthusiasm, and you might be really surprised at the outcome! Check out these activities from the American Dental Association: Crossword Puzzle, Coloring Sheet, and Connect the Dots

  3. Set an Example:

Who’s a better role model to your children than their parents? Yep! That’s You! Let your child watch your brushing routine. Stress the importance of proper technique and show them how you brush your teeth. Also explain to them why you brush … to keep those nasty cavity monsters away and have a shiny white smile! Your children will follow your lead. You never know, once they have mastered caring for their teeth, they may enjoy teaching their younger siblings, since they are so experienced!

  4. Add Incentive:

We understand you may be reluctant to “bribe” your child into having a good oral hygiene routine; sometimes a little added incentive can make a huge difference! It’s the little things, like purchasing new toothpaste in their favorite flavor, or letting them pick out a cool new toothbrush! These things may not seem like a big deal to you, but to children, it can make a world of difference. You can even hang a Brushing Calendar in your kiddo’s bathroom to be filled in each morning and night after they brush! Color it or get fancy with their favorite stickers!

  5. Stick to the Routine:

Children thrive on routines, so you’ve gotta stick to it! Whether you’re making it a game, incorporating some fun activities or special incentives, consistency is always the key. Always make oral hygiene part of the daily morning and evening routine, because these habits for healthy teeth will last a lifetime.
